All About Barbie Wigs

Removable wigs for Barbie dolls consist of a cap with several strands of hair and the hair itself. Therefore, making a wig involves 2 stages:

Creating the cap Making the hair strands

Both can be purchased. Sometimes it’s easier to buy a wig than to spend a lot of time making your own. Or you can also do it yourself.

Knitting bun wigs: Color selection

There are many ways to make a wig. We will consider 3 options:

Knitted cap + ready-made hair Ready-made wig cap + ready-made hair Fabric cap + yarn hair. The most difficult choice.

These methods can be combined with each other. To determine what size wig your Barbie doll needs, see our article on choosing wigs for Barbie dolls.

Let’s start with the simplest method and then move along the path of complexity.

Option 1. How to make a wig for a Barbie doll with ready-made hair and a cap

The easiest option is to buy ready-made hair and a ready-made wig cap and connect them.

You will need:

  • 2 wig caps
  • Short hair above 25cm
  • Long hair over 50cm
  • Thread, needle, scissors, thimble
  • Barbie head-sized foam ball

Instructions:

  • Pick up the wig cap and turn it inside out. Choose a cap that matches your hair color. If your hair is a contrasting color, use a neutral flesh-colored cap. You can conveniently sew hair onto the cap, with the cap placed on a foam ball with a diameter similar to that of a Barbie doll’s head.

Pick up the wig cap and turn it inside out.

  • Mark the center of the wig. Conversely, its location is closer to the forehead than to the top of the head. And draw concentric circles, along which you will sew the hair. The greater the distance between the lines, the more tufts of hair need to be sewn in that place. Vice versa. We will use shorter hair for the yellow part of the wig and longer hair for the rest of the wig.
  • Start sewing the long strands in front (where Barbie’s face would be). Continue sewing the ribbons behind. Follow the markings on the cap, sewing the tufts higher up. It can be convenient to use pins to fix them on the ball before sewing the tufts.

Continue sewing the ribbons behind.

  • Sew two tufts of hair. The wig should look like this:

Take the wig cap off the ball.

  • Take another wig cap. Turn it inside out and place it on the ball. Make a hole in the center. Mark a line one-third from the top. This line should correspond exactly to where the tufts were sewn to the first cap on the wig.
  • Sew the short strands along the drawn line. In the picture, the tufts were sewn in two layers.
  • Turn the cap over, pull the hair through the hole, and then turn the cap over again.
  • Cut the cap along the sewn hairline, leaving a little margin. Turn the cap back to the front.
  • Place the first cap with long hair on the ball. Sew the second cap on top of it.
  • Sew the short strands to the part of the cap that wasn’t filled, all the way to the top, keeping a distance of 5-10 mm between lines.
  • Distribute the hair evenly, forming a spiral.
  • To make the top flatter, you can use the method introduced in the previous master class, or use a special straightener (80-150ยฐ).

Now your hair looks natural from any angle. Put the wig on Barbie and style it however you want.
